20th January? Aha! It must be Slava then......

Woke up feeling very, very bad this morning. Seem to remember taking some absinthe, champagne and a jigger to a Serbian party last night. Had meant to have taken an offering of food, but something inside me said that it would be more reasonable to take absinthe.....

There is indeed something wrong in going to a religious occasion on a Monday night, taking strong alcohol as an offering. By golly it went down well though. There was masses of traditional Serbian food on offer, largely based around pickled cabbage it must be said. Having met my wife in Yugoslavia, we're not adverse to the stuff and heartily tucked in. Indeed we took doggie bags home. Our host, BN, plied us with alcohol and eventually we all plucked up enough courage to try the cocktail known as "Death in the afternoon" or in this case, Monday night.

Some people retched at the smell, I'll admit that. Out of perhaps twelve people, only three gave it a proper go. I'm betting that all three now slightly regret it. However, every so often you have to let things slide and just go with the flow. Slava is an unusual event for us here in the UK to celebrate, so why not run with wolves? If ever you get invited by a Serbian family to join in with their traditional 20th January family do, by heck accept. They're great hosts, and it's an experience to try true traditional food. We really enjoyed ourselves, even if I am suffering today.
