Retro biking is always fun. The Sunn Tox from 1998

Retro biking via online snap purchases - my Sunn Tox. We all surf online these days. Bit bored, fire up the mobile. I generally look at the local classifieds for interesting bikes. One of my hobbies being fixing up an older bike. Why? Well firstly I just like bikes. I don't discriminate when I buy; my oldest being from 1950. That was an old Raleigh tourer bought for £20. Fixed it up, spent a month polishing it just because I liked the colour. Sold it on as really it was two sizes too big for me. Did not make a profit as I advertised it at the price I paid plus the cost of all the parts fitted. The buyer was more than happy; it shone. Secondly the bikes chosen tend to reflect my view of a particular era or incident in my life. Hence predominantly the bikes are from the 1990's when I really started mountain biking, although I do also look at the earlier bikes. I learnt to ride on a 1930's tourer. You know that new Summer Lightning trail over on Leith Hill? First big victim today.....

Summer Lightning on Leith Hill with added blood. It doesn't happen very often, but I get invited out on rides with the teachers from a Reigate school now and then. My neighbour teaches there. I think I get invited only to help fix a mechanical or map read if there's a potential for them to get lost. Fairly confident I don't get invited for my sarcastic personality. Today I was supposed to be out with PP on his new Orange 5 , but it was in Coventry for some reason. Option 2 was a solo spin to Box Hill. Hmm, not mad keen. Then I got a text from TN; fancy Leith Hill? Meet at the top? Well no; my inner snob hates Leith Hill at the weekend. All middle managers, and walkers who stray all of 100m from the car parks. Dropping off the grid and its' affect on cycling.

Dropping off the grid. It wasn't intentional. I was a fully paid up member of the job for life brigade, having worked in the same industry for almost 30 years. All the qualifications, all the skills. Just that one day the industry died. Nobody wanted it any more, and it was expensive to maintain. In a few short years the budget halved. Something had to give. Where I worked where there were once 8 people in our team, now there are 1.5. I was redundant at 50. It was a relief to be truthful. We'd known it was dying for years, and were trying to drag it out, hopeful of a recovery. You can't drag things out for years without the inner voices telling you that it was all wrong. Working in a dying industry must be the same sort of wavelength emotionally as being in an abusive relationship, or having a long term illness. It eats away at you. You become miserable, disinclined to do anything, make excuses. Alcohol and fatty foods are your friend. I was the only redundancy. Othe...
